Objectives
The CRIFOR, (Centro di Ricerca e
Formazione per l'Ottimizzazione su Reti), is a research and training centre of the Dipartimento di Ingegneria del Territorio (DIT) (Department of Land Engineering) of the University of Cagliari, founded to promote the collaboration of Italian and foreign researchers. It has the following objectives:
:
- to develop theoretical and application research in the field of Network Optimisation;
- to co-ordinate national and European research projects on the fundamental principles of Network Optimisation and on its main applications, with particular reference to Water Networks, Communication Networks, and Transport Networks;
- to promote post-graduate and post-doctorate training courses on the fundamental principles and applications of Network Optimisation;
- to test, produce, and make available high computational efficiency Network Optimisation software;
- to organise oriented application graphical interfaces for friendly access to efficient software.
The CRIFOR is intended as a research structure open to the contribution of the national and international scientific community, and to the collaboration of academic and industrial research institutions in pursuing its objectives.
The CRIFOR To this purpose CRIFOR intends to activate agreements of national and international scientific co-operation, and it will have an International Scientific Council that will periodically assess the quality of its research activity and applications.
The CRIFOR,In the compilation and development of application software CRIFOR’s initial orientation will be in the following sectors:
- development of software for the management and planning of water resource systems in an extended land use context (preparation of water emergency plans, determination of structural and non-structural intervention works on water plans, etc.);
- development of software for the sizing and monitoring of water distribution networks (plan for pipeline network, reliability of distribution systems, etc.);
- development of software for the management of automated communication networks (the Internet, cellular phones, radio-TV broadcasting, etc.);
- development of software for the management and planning of goods transportation networks, and of non-standard transportation networks for persons (school transport, company transport, the transport of handicapped persons, weak demand transport, dial-a-ride transport, the multimodal transport of persons and goods, etc.);
- development of localisation and allocation software (for warehouses and storehouses, for plants, organisation of production processes, etc.).
CRIFOR intends to collect, validate, develop, test, and make available Network Optimisation software, while at the same time guarantee its accuracy, efficiency, and portability. To this purpose, an Internet site will be made available to allow individual researchers, research and development centres, and higher training centres, to access the software and the documentation. The software will be managed by the CRIFOR development team.
Main activities in progress and to be developed in the next future are the following:
- web page: educational and scientific tools, network optimization software, dedicated software, test problems and results.
- training courses at regional level and objective oriented, etc.
- scientific meetings organization (AIRO2001, Netflow2003, etc.)
- stages and informal meetings organization.
